Today, we enter the two day celebration of the "Day of the Dead"/"Día de los Muertos". This is a time when we remember, and celebrate all the wonderful people who have 'gone on' before us, and celebrate their spirits still among us. So in honor of the long life of beloved antiquarian and designer, Furlow Gatewood, I finished this painting of one of his serene interiors, in one of his four famous 'follies' in Americus, Georgia. As he left us three days ago, I like to imagine him, now, sharing his famous cheese straws, (and maybe sweet tea) with fellow southerner Julia Reed...and the two of them having the last laugh on their respective 'follys'/homes that they built in Georgia (Furlow) and Mississippi (Julia). Plus as I looked through my treasured book, "One Man's Folly", I found myself wondering if Furlow named the colors of his walls delicious names like "mouse pelt", "elephant breath" (a la Farrow and Ball paint colors), or did he invent his own subtle colors based on the coat of his beloved Italian greyhounds or the bright white of the peacocks roaming the grounds? And I continue to wonder: Do beautiful names portent a life spent creating beauty?
