I am listening to Ann Patchett's book of new essays these days, and in one she talks about her first Thanksgiving in college at Sarah Lawrence when she had to remain there, in an unheated building, and cook her first Thanksgiving dinner for herself and other strays. She says that the meal turned out just passable but that they were all INSANELY fortunate to be there, then, getting an amazing education...and that they were just "too cool to bow their heads to anyone or anything and give thanks...but NOW, she realizes how fortunate they all were. It seems equally apropos today, dealing with a world wide pandemic, that we not be too cool THIS holiday season to regularly stop, bow our heads and acknowledge how insanely fortunate many of us are: home, friends, family....health.
