Who embodies the American story more than Ralph Lauren??? What did we "revolution" for if not for people to come here, imagine a world of their making, and be in a country where nothing, not class distinctions, education, family name...stands in the way of pursuing a dream? In America, Ralph could be unapologetic about his humble origins, his family surname (Lifshitz, just changed that sucker to 'Lauren'), his youthful lack of worldliness. He freely says that when he chose 'Polo' as a logo, he'd never SEEN polo. When asked to sell his early designs under a Dept. store name, he refused and kept to his name and his vision. He ended up writing the story of America in clothes!!! It's what we "revolutioned" for: so people could pursue their dreams!!!

I titled this one "Leap Before You Look" because I think my grandkids have life figured out. When you see an opportunity, such as delicious coool water on a hot day...or free ice cream every afternoon at the Arizona Inn...don't EVER think about your hair getting wet or the calories in ice cream...just hurl yo bad self into that situation! DON'T OVERTHINK IT!

One of the many things that I love about water, is the shifting color...due to light, surface underneath the water, whether the water is still (glassy) or ruffled up. I love...I mean it's hard and endlessly interesting....to try to capture what is going on. And my daughter (who is also a painter) agreed that we should just make bracelets that say: WWDHD (what would David Hockney do?)

"Jump In" Are you an exuberant 'jumper inner'? Me neither. For example, I was trying to get this painting done for Friday (You know, with some caption about 'Jumping Into the Weekend') but I didn't get it done til Sat afternoon! And actually it's kinda fitting. It looks real cool to be people jumping into water, (and the fourth girl from the left really gets points for style)...but honestly, I am a 'wader in-er' I like. to approach everything slowly, feeling my way into it...no big shocking (some call it exhilarating) plunge for me. I once had a medical doctor ask me about my daily mood/attitude...and when I looked confused he said, "I mean, do you bounce out of bed every morning, eager to tackle the day, enthusiastic about everything?" Um, no....and that sounds kinda harsh and overwhelming. I am more like a photograph, that is slowly coming into view and focus in the developing tray...or a cat that cautiously and quietly enters the day, the situation, the water. So if you are one of those "jumpers/bouncer/enthusiasts" I am sooo happy FOR YOU. I will be the one bringing up the slower, contemplative, journaling, coffee slurping rear. XO

As of today I am back from the two high school graduations, of two grandchildren, in two different cities. These kids are jumping into life...but I was REALLY moved by the sea of parents who courageously jumped into parenthood 18 years ago. I mean, what a leap of faith is the journey of parenthood. Yes these kids are brave too...but just for a moment let's pause and acknowledge all of the time, treasure and energy that the parents have invested to bring these children along to a place where they CAN jump into the water and paddle away.

Why do I find this image so exhilarating? Well, it perfectly depicts how I WANT to approach my work and my life. I want to "have at it" with abandon and joy...not worried about potential cold water, big waves, etc. But let's face it...I am talking about 'ideal scenario' here. There are SOME days when you just want to wade in the shallows...and some days that you want to stay safely on the shore and just 'look' at all of the danger and power that is the ocean we live in.
